Official closure ceremony of the four-year project titled “Capacity building of women and girls and their equal participation in sports and social life” funded by the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) and Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) took place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on June 03, 2016. In 2012 Tajikistan became one out of five countries receiving UNOSDP and UEFA grant for capacity building of girls for equal participation in social life and sports. The project was implemented by NTKF in close cooperation with Government and national and international agencies.Within the project the large-scale survey of the barriers and needs of girls to access to sports was conducted nationwide. The further steps included conduction of series of trainings, forums, capacity building actions and advocacy events. Sixteen women’s sports clubs on football (8 centers) and other types of sports (athletics, basketball, volleyball, badminton – 8 centers) were established within the project throughout the country with provision of all the necessary equipment and sports clothes for athletes.
At least 20 sports events were organized during the project cycle, in particular, the national women football tournament which was devoted to UN’s 70th anniversary and UNFPA’s 20th anniversary in Tajikistan and was held with involvement of more than 300 girls – football players from 13 districts and towns of Tajikistan.
More than 600 girls from all regions of Tajikistan benefited from the project making them stronger and helping to speak out their problems and being active advocates for women and girls equal participation in social life through participation in sports.
Thanks to the support from partners and experts and recommendations from government structures, the project team was able to develop the gender-sensitive strategy of development of women’s sports in Tajikistan for 2016-2020 which was presented to the Committee of Youth, Sports and Tourism under the Government of the RoT for further expertise and lobbying.
In general, the project allowed raising the awareness of the public about healthy life style and women’s sports development. Such measures help to stimulate the development of women’s sports in the country and remove barriers and obstacles which hamper girl’s access to sports and social life.
