UN in Tajikistan

The UN has been present in Tajikistan since 1992, commencing with the UN Tajikistan Office for Peace-building (UNTOP), which ended its mission in October 2007. Since 1993, the UN has increased its presence to 21 specialized agencies, funds and programmes of the UN and World Bank. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and International Finance Corporation are also active in Tajikistan and working closely with the UN Country Team (UNCT). The aim of the UN in Tajikistan is to assist the Government in implementing the Country Development reforms and provide support in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals for the period 2015-2030

The UNCT cooperation and coordination is also comprehensive in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention, youth and gender issues, food security and nutrition, disaster management and topics like health, WASH and education. The coordination of the UNCT is facilitated through the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator (RCO), whose main function is to support the UNCT through the coordination and analytical assistance as well as joint UNCT programming opportunities.

Most UN specialized agencies, programmes, funds are housed in two main office complexes in Dushanbe: UN House and the VEFA commercial building and in five field offices. Several international financial institutions maintain separate offices. Current common services include security, ATM facilities, travel, pouch, reception/switchboard (PABX), building and grounds maintenance of premises. The Operational Management Team (OMT) meets regularly to improve those common services, with UNDP acting as administrative agent for several agencies. The Security Management Team (SMT) ensures adherence to security regulations, including physical and procedural measures to bolster staff safety, while also maintaining an effective emergency communications and warden system. The UN Communication group ensures the public and international community is kept well informed of UN activities and progress while advocating for joint action on environment, health and other issues.
