Written Message on International Women’s Day Russian version>>> New York, 8 March 2017 Women’s rights are human rights. But in these troubled times, as our world becomes more unpredictable and chaotic, the rights of women and girls are being reduced, restricted and reversed. Empowering women and girls is the only way to protect their rights and make sure they can realize their full potential. Historic imbalances in power relations between men and women, exacerbated by growing inequalities within and between societies and countries, are leading to greater discrimination against women and girls. Around the world, tradition, cultural values and religion are being misused to curtail women’s rights, to entrench sexism and defend misogynistic practices. Read more

New book on gender equality and social protection presented by FAO 14 February 2017, Moscow – Gender equality, social protection and rural development in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, a new title from FAO, was presented here today at the Central Scientific Agricultural Library. A collection of articles written by economists, sociologists, and gender specialists and practitioners from twelve post-Soviet countries in Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia, the publication is a unique effort to review and analyze issues that sit at the intersection of gender equality, social protection and rural development. Prepared as a follow-up to an independent national experts’ meeting held in Minsk in 2016, the volume aims to fill the existing gap in research and documented knowledge on the subject and to draw the attention of governments and civil society to the topic. “Women make up the majority of the rural population in the region and a significant part of the workforce employed in agriculture,” said FAO senior gender and social protection specialist Dono Abdurazakova, “but they prevail in the low-skilled and low-paid jobs. Rural women's access to assets, productive resources and social services is significantly lower than that of men and urban women, and participation in public life has dropped dramatically over the past decade. The current trajectory will not get us the world we want. Change carries high rewards: first and foremost, women will have the capability to make equal life and career choices in these fields. This engagement carries benefits for everyone. Estimates are that GDP across 144 developing countries would be boosted by up to US$13-18 billion, if 600 million women and girls go online in the next three years. UN in Tajikistan welcomes customs agreement entering into force (Dushanbe, 21 December 2016) – People affected by large-scale disasters in Tajikistan can now be reached with vital international assistance faster than before. A customs agreement between the Government of Tajikistan and the United Nations in Tajikistan has entered into force. The first of its kind in Central Asia, the agreement will simplify the import, export and transit of humanitarian relief goods in large-scale emergencies.   Since 1970, such customs agreements have been common practice globally, especially, in countries prone to disasters. With the growing number of disasters and climate change effects, more countries are investing in emergency preparedness.   Tajikistan is susceptible to a wide range of natural hazards: earthquakes, floods, landslides, mudslides, and others. In the last 10 years, some 3 million people or a third of the total population of Tajikistan have suffered as a result of natural disasters.   “Together with the Government of Tajikistan, we have been developing this customs agreement since 2014. Therefore, its signing in April 2016 and the coming into force this fall already constitute a significant achievement,” noted Mr. Valijon Ranoev, OCHA humanitarian advisory team representative. “Although the agreement is just one component in a set of preparedness measures, its significance stems from the fact that it will save time and significantly speed up the delivery of aid to people affected by large-scale emergencies”.   “The international humanitarian system is improving each year. Around the world, we are increasingly able to save more lives and respond faster than before to the needs of all people affected by emergencies – children, women, the elderly and men,” said Ms. Pratibha Mehta, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan. “However, disasters are happening more often and with greater severity. We need to be prepared to respond quickly. The Customs agreement will help cut... Read more

For that reason, World Statistics Day this year is being observed under the theme “Better data, better lives.” We need to ensure that everyone is counted, especially the most poor and vulnerable. No child’s birth shall remain unregistered. No incidence of disease, no matter how remote the location, shall remain unrecorded.
